Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry declined Thursday to participate in the Newsmax ION Television 2012 Presidential Debate moderated by real estate magnate Donald Trump scheduled Dec. 27 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Perry's campaign said in a statement the Texas governor wanted to focus on the Iowa caucuses.

"Governor Perry has talked to Donald Trump in recent days and respects him and the folks at Newsmax very much. There two debates in the next 7 days.

"Traditional retail campaigning in the days and weeks leading up to the Iowa caucus is the Perry campaign's top priority. In the coming weeks, Gov. Perry will be in Iowa almost continually, meeting with real voters, doing town hall meetings and events and talking American jobs, faith and overhauling Washington, DC to Iowa voters."

GOP frontunner Newt Gingrich and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum have both agreed to participate in the debate. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney declined earlier in the week without giving specific reasons. Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman have declined, and Michele Bachmann said this morning she is still thinking about participating.

However, several major conservative groups and leaders have vocally endorsed the debate throughout the week.

I just can't stop laughing. It's like Donald Trump has leprosy or something!

Well...that leave Santorum and Bachmann. My money is on Bachmann to accept. Surely if she can shred Obama in a debate, she can easily shred Gingrich or Santorum in a Trump-ed up debate. Right?

Santorum is in, as is Gingrich. Bachmann is a maybe. Paul, Huntsman, Romney, and Perry are out. Even if Bachmann decides to participate, that's only 3 out of the 7 candidates. Not looking good for Trump.

Ahhh yes, I forgot that Santroum did accept already. Guess we will see if Bachmann is still willing to kiss the 'royal Trump ass and accept. With only Gingrich and Santorum, it should be a cinch for her to shred them into tiny pieces. And maybe sans any gaffs. /s

I hope so, RB. I think the only reason she is even patting him on the a$$ at this point is that he said he may make a run for President as third party he will put together and she is hoping he will give her the VP nod. It will be truly laughable to see Trump fall flat on his face in such a truly stupid Trump-ed up scheme to garner limelight for his faltering show. He keeps doing the Palin 'maybe' about his running for President again, but, he knows he has no chance of winning. And he has already proven that he will not give up his show, even for a shot at the Presidency, as he knows he can't win.

Well...I stand corrected. Bachmann's handlers got one right anyway, they kept her out of the center ring of the Trump circus. I think mainly because she would never stand a chance against Gingrich and would wind up looking even far more stupid than she already does. At least now she can stay in the contest until the primaries.

But, I doubt that Santorum will fare any better. So of course, Trump will have to declare Gingrich the winner and endorse him. Which he would do anyway, no matter how stupid Gingrich might look.

Newsmax and bachmann have been in a love affair for months I'm surprised they didn't ask her to be co-moderator.
